There’s a new app out there that’s become the talk of the town. It’s called Buycott and it’s the work of a 26-year-old freelance programmer named Ivan Pardo. For the last 16 months he has been working on an app that helps fight the actors that he considers the “bad boys” in the food industry like Monsanto or Koch Industries.
I only say “bad boys” because these giant conglomerates have been under a lot of scrutiny as of late. The former, for example, is known for its aggressive use of genetically modified seeds, even in countries where they are illegal. This app would help you identify those items, if that is an important part of your value proposition, when you meander down the grocery aisle. Scan the barcode of any item — from food to cleaning products to household essentials — and Buycott will trace its ownership all the way down to the ground level or to the top company. (more…)
